Καλώς ήρθατε στην Ελλάδα! (Welcome to Greece!)

Embarking on a new life in a foreign country can be an exciting yet challenging journey. Greece, with its rich history, breathtaking landscapes, and warm Mediterranean charm, offers a unique experience for expats.

This guide aims to provide essential information and insights for expatriates navigating the vibrant tapestry of Greek life, covering everything from cultural nuances to government requirements:

Greek culture

Living in Greece

Embracing Greek Culture

  1. Language and Communication: Greek is the official language, and while English is widely spoken, learning some basic Greek phrases will enhance your experience and endear you to locals. Greeks appreciate the effort to embrace their language.
  2. Social Customs: Greeks are known for their hospitality and strong family bonds. Don’t be surprised if strangers invite you into their homes for a meal – it’s a common expression of Greek warmth.
  3. Time Concept: Greeks have a more relaxed approach to time, and punctuality may not be as crucial as in some other cultures. Adjusting to the slower pace will help you integrate smoothly.
  4. Cuisine and Lifestyle: Indulge in the Mediterranean diet with its fresh vegetables, olive oil, and seafood. Cafés are social hubs, and enjoying a leisurely coffee is a cherished daily ritual.

Cost of Living

  1. Housing: Rental costs vary across regions. Athens and Thessaloniki are more expensive than smaller towns. Explore options like Airbnb, local real estate websites, or enlist the help of a real estate agent to find accommodation that suits your needs.
  2. Utilities and Transportation: Utilities are reasonably priced, but transportation costs can add up. Public transportation is affordable and reliable in major cities, while owning a car might be more convenient in rural areas.
  3. Grocery Shopping: Local markets offer fresh produce at lower prices than supermarkets. Embrace the Greek habit of buying from neighborhood markets for a taste of authentic local life.

Healthcare System

  1. Public Healthcare: Greece has a public healthcare system that is accessible to expats. While basic healthcare is provided, consider private health insurance for additional coverage and faster service. The health insurance contributions are covered by the social security contributions. However, employees must register for health insurance as an insured person. Health insurance contributions are calculated from the gross taxable income (in-kind included). The same maximum calculation base is applicable as in the case of social security, i.e. EUR 7,800 per month. Although the contributions are paid both by the employee and the employers, the reporting and payment is done by the employer on a monthly basis.
  2. Pharmacies: Pharmacies (φαρμακείο) are plentiful and offer over-the-counter medications. Prescriptions from doctors are required for specific medications.

Navigating Government Requirements

  1. Residence Permit: Non-EU expats need a residence permit. Plan a consultation with our immigration lawyers to begin the application process. Documentation usually includes proof of income, health insurance, and a rental agreement.
  1. Taxation: Understanding the Greek tax system is essential. Seek advice from a local accountant to ensure compliance with tax obligations. Greece has Double Taxation Agreements with numerous countries, helping you avoid paying taxes on the same income in both Greece and your home country.
  1. Banking: Opening a bank account in Greece is straightforward. Provide proof of address, a valid ID or passport, and a tax identification number (AFM) obtained from the tax office. (Additional documents may be necessary depending on the country you wish to visit).
  1. Education for Expat Children: If you have children, explore international schools or bilingual programs to ensure they receive quality education while adapting to the local culture.

Embracing the Greek Lifestyle

  1. Festivals and Celebrations: Participate in local festivals, such as the Carnival of Patras or the Ohi Day celebrations. These events offer a glimpse into Greek traditions and bring communities together.
  1. Outdoor Activities: With its diverse landscapes, Greece is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. From hiking in the mountains to island-hopping in the Aegean Sea, there’s something for everyone.
  1. Making Friends: Join expat groups, language exchange meetups, or local clubs to build a social network. Greeks are friendly, and establishing connections will enrich your experience.
Greek Lifestyle

Living in Greece as an expat is a transformative experience, offering a blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.

By understanding the nuances of daily life, navigating government requirements, and immersing yourself in the vibrant Greek lifestyle, you’ll find that Greece has more to offer than just stunning landscapes and ancient ruins – it’s a place to call home.

Embrace the journey, savor the moments, and Γειά σας! (Cheers!) to your new life in Greece.
